Plasma vs. LCD
To date, Plasma technology produces a preferable picture due to higher Black Level to White contrast rate of over 1000:1 up to 3000:1. The best LCD televisions (like those produced by Sharp and Sony) have managed to topple the 1000:1 contrast ratio barrier. Plasma technology also produces richer color information and more natural coloration. Plasmas provide a wider viewing angle, approximately 160° v.s. under 130 for LCD’s.
LCD screens produce a brighter picture and are preferable in a brightly lit environment due to inherent anti glare technology and brightness.
Other considerations, Plasmas do not maintain picture quality at high altitudes over 7,000 to 10,000 feet. Plasmas are usually available in larger sizes. Power consumption of LCD TVs is about half of Plasma consumption and sometimes the backlight can be replaced in an LCD, significantly extending the life of the TV.
Cost
LCD High Definition TV displays will have a higher resolution per same size comparison than plasma yet those extra pixels and the production process of LCD HDTVs cost more money to produce. In other words, expect to pay about the same, for the same resolution. As technology advances, Commercial Satellite recommends paying attention to the resolution v.s. the cost as the superior deal will present itself.
