The Digital Transition in San Diego

June 1st, 2010

What is the digital TV (DTV) transition?

The switch from analog to digital broadcast television is referred to as the digital TV (DTV) transition. In 1996, the U.S. Congress authorized the distribution of an additional broadcast channel to each broadcast TV station so that they could start a digital broadcast channel while simultaneously continuing their analog broadcast channel. Later, Congress mandated that February 17, 2009 would be the last day for full-power television stations to broadcast in analog. Broadcast stations in all U.S. markets are currently broadcasting in both analog and digital. After February 17, 2009, full-power television stations will broadcast in digital only.

Why are we switching to DTV?

An important benefit of the switch to all-digital broadcasting is that it will free up parts of the valuable broadcast spectrum for public safety communications (such as police, fire departments, and rescue squads). Also, some of the spectrum will be auctioned to companies that will be able to provide consumers with more advanced wireless services (such as wireless broadband).

Consumers also benefit because digital broadcasting allows stations to offer improved picture and sound quality, and digital is much more efficient than analog. For example, rather than being limited to providing one analog program, a broadcaster is able to offer a super sharp “high definition” (HD) digital program or multiple “standard definition” (SD) digital programs simultaneously through a process called “multicasting.” Multicasting allows broadcast stations to offer several channels of digital programming at the same time, using the same amount of spectrum required for one analog program.

So, for example, while a station broadcasting in analog on channel 7 is only able to offer viewers one program, a station broadcasting in digital on channel 7 can offer viewers one digital program on channel 7-1, a second digital program on channel 7-2, a third digital program on channel 7-3, and so on. This means more programming choices for viewers. Further, DTV can provide interactive video and data services that are not possible with analog technology.

Digital Signage for the Hospitality Industry

June 1st, 2010

Digital Signage is the perfect platform for bars, restaurants and hotels to efficiently communicate real time messages to a sometimes large and dispersed audience. The Hospitality industry has long needed a communication tool that can entertain, direct, alert, inform and train all in one. Digital signage is the tool to do just this.

In the past, a bar could only feature what was being broadcast by their Pay TV provider. With digital signage software, this same screen can now be split into three or more zones to maximize customer service and possible sales revenue. For example, while featuring a football grand final, you can have your drink or meal specials scrolling in one section of the screen and at the base of the screen, you can also display news and weather information via a Ticker. This ultimately improves the customer service levels a pub or bar can offer its patrons while maximizing advertising or sales revenue.

The hospitality industry revolves around customer service. Digital signage provides the ultimate customer service tool whereby you can;

  • Keep your customers or guests up to date with news and weather information while they wait in reception
  • Provide in room entertainment services using Video on Demand
  • Direct guests to a featured location of the resort
  • Provide guests with an interactive activity guide for the local area
  • Provide time sensitive menus on queue when requested
  • Alert guests to an emergency followed by instructions
  • Ensure all customers can understand what is being announced by displaying your message in multiple languages Not only a customer service tool, digital signage software can be used internally to maximize human resource efforts.

Digital signage gives you the ability to provide on demand staff training in order to keep the costs associated with high staff turnover at a minimum. Employees are able to select when to activate the most recent training module or you can conduct a staff meeting using a pre-published training campaign to run through with your new members. Digital signage for the hospitality industry also allows the CEO of a company to encourage their staff by publishing real time messages to the screens while the staff meeting is in progress.

Advantages and Uses of Video Conferencing

June 1st, 2010

Uses of Video conferencing

Video conferencing can be used in a host of different environments, which is one of the reasons the technology is so popular. General uses for video conferencing include business meetings, educational training or instruction and collaboration among health officials or other representatives. Thus far video conferencing has been used in the following fields:

- Telemedicine

- Telecommunication

- Education

- Surveillance

- Security

- Emergency Response

Advantages and Benefits of Video conferencing

Perhaps the biggest advantage or benefit video conferencing has to offer is the ability to meet with people in remote locations without incurring travel expenses or other expenses associated with face to face communication. Business meetings, educational meetings, health-care conferences and more can all be easily conducted thanks to video conferencing technology. Individuals living in remote areas can also use video conferencing to keep in touch if you will, with the world at large.

More people are easily accessed and contacted using video conferencing. Because of this technology information and knowledge are often disseminated at more rapid rates, and collaboration between people occurs more willingly and freely. Students can take advantage of video conferencing to take classes at distant locations that would normally be unavailable. They can also take classes that will accommodate busy schedules.

Video conferencing can stimulate better brainstorming, knowledge sharing and information gathering. Businesses can use video conferencing to provide presentations to key members of an organization or to solicit new clients in a professional manner, regardless of their location. The possibilities for communication are virtually endless thanks to video conferencing technologies.

Digital Signage – An Innovative and Cost-Effective Medium of Advertising

June 1st, 2010

Digital Signage is a dynamic content display system which is used to broadcast information using a combination of software and hardware. It is becoming a popular visual medium to reach consumers across various locations and time zones. With the help of this technology, information can be transferred using electronic signs, LCD’s, LED’s, Plasma screens, scrolling message boards etc.

Initially, it was associated with high costs, but today, it has become more accessible to businesses and has proven to generate an excellent return on investment. Presentation of content in a wide range of formats and lower costs gives it an edge over the traditional static methods of advertising. This method follows the principle of installing screens, attracting attention and increasing sales and productivity.

Communication channels can be improved with the help of this technology. Its benefits are becoming obvious to people worldwide and it is one of the fastest growing marketing channels. This technology influences a customer’s behavior by attracting consumers to products, creating brand awareness and influencing their decisions. The result of using dynamic digital signage is the ability to increase sales using real time announcements and promotions while maintaining cost efficiency.

A digital signage system is a network of electronic devices that are controlled remotely from a central location. This solutions make it easier to add, remove or edit content. It makes the content information dynamic and is therefore replacing traditional static print signs and billboards. Electronic devices which work on this technology can transmit information using signage software and can be used to manage any type of display. This format is easy to integrate into existing networks using CAT5/5e/6 cables.

Digital signage is becoming a popular medium to reach people across various geographical locations. This form of advertising is creating a revolution in media and information industries. It is no longer the exclusive domain of high end retailers and is the latest choice of marketers. This technology is now penetrating stations, airports, hospitals, hotels, corporate boardrooms, cinemas as well as amusement parks and is working its way into mass as well as high end advertising. It is the future of out of home advertising and is being adopted globally.
